You can beat the heat when you know the trick

Summer in Bangladesh comes with all those sweet fruits and, of course, deadly summer heat. Summer here gets intense when the temperature rises above 35 degrees Celsius. The humidity level makes the heat more deadly than it actually should be. Even when you are in the comfort of your home, it feels like you are burning, especially if you do not have an air conditioner or a cooler. The worst is if you live on the top floor. But wait, there are ways to keep your home cool naturally without spending extra on cooling items. Let's know the way out.

Block the Heat

A bright bedroom with sheer curtains covering large windows, natural light streaming in, a vase of red flowers on a glass table, and a cozy bed with white bedding.

We get that you need sunlight and natural light to start your day on a positive note. But keeping the windows open for a longer time invites a lot of absorbed heat into the night. So, you need to keep your windows closed during the afternoon, especially when the temperature is high. Also, use curtains and blinds for your windows, which block the heat.

Add Greenaries

Two vibrant potted plants, one with soft, feathery leaves, and another with broad, glossy leaves, sit gracefully on a sunny windowsill, bringing life to the space.

Indoor plants are a great way to beat the scorching heat, plus they look great. Try to place ferns, aloe vera, and indoor palm trees, as they can absorb toxins in the air.  If you place them in the west and the west side of the home, they block direct sun rays.

In case you do not have enough floors for plants, try placing small hanging plants. Grow some vines and creepers on the window and balcony grills.

If you have enough floor space at the entrance, on the balcony, consider growing your garden. Tall and green plants can block sunray rays from entering your home. Also, some plants release moisture. The greens help as a natural cooler.

Install Energy Saving Lights

Many lights radiate excess heat when they are kept on even for a few minutes. And since evening until bedtime, we do need lights on. So, try to install energy-efficient LED or CFL lights that do not heat up the home. Also, remember to unplug the electronic equipment or lights when not in use, as it blocks them from generating excessive heat.

Let the Evening to Night Air Inside

Opening windows at night helps to remove the heat trapped inside. The evening cool air helps to cool down your home. Especially if you open the windows on opposite sides of the house, it helps with cross ventilation, which enhances the cooling effect.

Embrace Warm Colors

We understand you love colors and love keeping your rooms colorful. But if your home has more dark colors, it will absorb more heat. So, try to decorate the high-use areas with warm tone colors like white, beige, yellow, and grey. Fun fact is, you will get many textures and shades available within these colors.  So, you will get to experiment with themes while keeping your home cool.

Not only the room or ceiling colors, the dark furnishings can warm your home. Do not overcrowd your place with dark-toned furniture.

Maintain Rugs

Rugs usually have an insulation characteristic that traps heat inside and makes your home feel even warmer. So, try to avoid placing rugs during summer or heatstorms. Bare floors help to keep your home cooler.

But if you want to keep rugs for the aesthetic value, then play some tricks. First, do not place the rugs near the window or where the sun exposure is high. And the rug material should be breathable and lightweight. Bamboo and jute rugs do not trap heat, unlike the wool and synthetic fiber ones.

The color of the materials should be light. It helps to prevent absorbing heat. For better output, place a rug pad under the rug. It prevents the rug from making the fool warmer.

DIY Tricks

DIY tricks are great ways to cool down your home instantly. You can place a bowl of ice in front of a stand fan or below the ceiling fans to circulate cool air.

Soak lightweight and small-sized towels, handkerchiefs, and hang them near the window. When the water evaporates from the damp clothes, it tends to cool the air around.

Go Traditional

To get over summer heat naturally, nothing beats traditional methods. You do not need to spend bucks or too much energy on these tricks. Store drinking water in earthen pots to bring down the inside temperature. The pots have pores or porous surfaces that allow the water to evaporate and keep your home cool.

If you are to renovate or construct your home, choose ceramic tiles. Because ceramic tends to stay cooler. And cooler floors mean a cooler home.

Lower Heat Generating Activities

Cooking is an essential part of every home, you really cannot avoid it. But what you can do is use your stove as little as possible. Heat-generating cooking equipment like ovens, grills, stoves, and electric burners should be turned off when not in use.

Open Doors

Allow internal doors to create airflow inside your home. So, during the evening, keep them open for cross ventilation, it lets the fresh air move freely and stale air to exit. This helps to reduce the internal temperature.

Look For Summer Friendly Fabrics

When it comes to couch fabric or bedsheets, consider choosing breathable materials. Do not choose heavy materials as they can trap the heat inside.

If you like to spread bedsheets with embroidery or raised designs, do it in the winter. Because these thick designs reduce airflow. Consider choosing materials like cotton and linen in light colors so that they do not reflect heat.

Wrap Up

Our ancestors could overpower the scorching heat without an air-conditioner, so we can too. But considering our home structures and modern-day equipment, it gets quite difficult to lower the temperature with an easy fix. But cooling your home naturally is no rocket science either. And combination of these above-mentioned methods may work the best for you. Also, by adapting to natural tricks, you are doing your part to keep the environment sustainable for the future. And you are also saving money with these.
