Gold cup handles on white panelled doors, six sets of them in a line, are what the eye takes first here. They sit in a warm brass finish on a door module that repeats along the entire wall without a break. This is the master bedroom of a 1,600 sq ft apartment in Uttara Sector 6, and it had to hold two adults’ worth of clothing, a dressing station and somewhere to sit down, inside a footprint of no particular generosity.
Finishes are deliberately warmer and more classical than the rest of the flat. Channel tufting, brass, beige and layered sheers at the window, against the white lacquer and grey fluting that run everywhere else. A room the household retreats to at the end of a day is allowed to disagree with the apartment around it, and usually it should. The Channel Headboard and the Lattice Panel Behind It
A channel tufted headboard in pale fabric backs the bed, its channels running horizontally, and it is set into a wall panel carrying a diagonal lattice at a much larger scale. Two textures on one wall usually argue. These do not, because the scales are far apart and the directions cross, so the channels read as foreground and the lattice as a field behind them. That lattice is a relative of the carved screens in the prayer room and study design in Uttara Sector 6, drawn on the same geometric grid but left solid and painted out instead of being cut through.
The Six Door Wardrobe Wall
Storage takes one long wall entirely, in classic white panelling with a brass sconce mounted at the end of the run. That brass is the same finish as the linear sconces in the modern dining room design in Uttara Sector 6, so the two rooms carry one warmth of metal between them and neither reads as a late addition. Inside, the wardrobe was divided from a count of what has to go into it rather than from a standard ratio, which is why one bay takes full length garments, two are shelved for folded stacks and the rest carry drawers on full extension runners.
Humidity settled the internals. Every bay is ventilated at the back and the base stands clear of the floor slab, because a sealed wardrobe in this city develops a smell by its second monsoon that no quantity of naphthalene solves. Doors are hinged rather than sliding, since a sliding pair always leaves half the storage shut, and there is just enough clearance at the foot of the bed to swing them. In practice, bedroom interior design in Dhaka lives or dies on details of that kind rather than on door profiles.
The Arched Window Bench
The window recess was closed at sill level and turned into an arched bench seat, with lantern style sconces on both returns and a lift up cushion over storage beneath. This is the best value move available in a bedroom of ordinary size. Dead depth that would otherwise become a ledge for a dying plant turns into a reading seat, a linen box and the most used spot in the room, without taking a single square foot of floor. The vertical fluting in the modern living room design in Uttara Sector 6 performs a similar trick with a different tool, giving an event to a plane that would otherwise be flat.
Two Lit Recesses on the Night Circuit
An arched niche sits beside the wardrobe run with a warm strip concealed behind its reveal, and a slim column of lit display shelves stands next to the bench. Both run on a separate low output circuit, dim enough to cross the room at two in the morning without waking anybody and bright enough to find a glass of water. The shelves carry books, a clock and a few objects rather than storage, which is what stops a room this full of joinery from reading as a fitted furniture showroom.
The Vanity Desk Under a Gold Framed Mirror
A gold framed mirror hangs over a white vanity desk near the window, positioned so daylight crosses the face from the side rather than from behind, which is the difference between a usable mirror and a silhouette. Curtains are layered, a beige fabric on the outer track with sheers behind, so light can be brought down in stages through the afternoon instead of being either on or off. That control is what makes a dressing position beside a window workable at all.
Sockets were set into the return of the desk instead of the wall behind the mirror, so a hairdryer cable never crosses the working surface. The desk top is 400 mm deep, which is enough for a mirror position and not enough for the surface to become a place where things accumulate. Details at that scale only appear when somebody measures how a room is actually used rather than how it photographs.
The Carpenters and the Site Built Carcasses
None of this joinery arrived flat packed. The wardrobe carcasses, the bench, the niche and the vanity were built by our own carpentry team on site, working from dimensioned elevations, because a Dhaka slab is never as square as the drawing and a factory unit meets that reality badly. Panels were sprayed off site and fitted here, with scribes cut against the plaster on the day.
