Four separate functions had to fit on two walls. A wardrobe for two people, a working desk, a dressing table and open shelving for handbags, in a flat with no dressing room and no floor to spare for freestanding furniture. Anything that could not be built into the joinery run was never going to survive the first year. The second constraint was tonal rather than dimensional. Everything loud in the 2,000 sq ft Bashundhara R/A Block-M apartment project happens on the other side of this door: murals, mirror clusters, three wall treatments inside a single room. A bedroom that tried to compete with all of that would leave nowhere in the apartment to stop looking at the end of a day.
Keeping One Room Quiet in a Loud Flat
The answer was a channel tufted upholstered headboard set into a fluted wall panel, with the tufting run horizontally rather than vertically. Horizontal channels widen the bed across a wall of ordinary apartment ceiling height, where vertical ones would have stretched a proportion that did not need stretching. Above it hangs a gold sunburst mirror, and that is the entire decorative content of the room. Apart from the door handles and the mirror frame there is no other metal in here.
The restraint is easier to judge with the neighbours in view. The modern living room design in Bashundhara R/A Block-M carries diamond relief, fluted panelling and a feather mural inside one set of four walls. Putting any of that behind this bed would have been the obvious move and the wrong one. A flat needs at least one room where the walls stop performing, and in a plan this size it has to be the room people sleep in.
Four Functions on Two Walls, and a Corner Left Empty
Wardrobe, desk, dressing unit and display shelving all sit inside the same continuous joinery run across the two long walls, which leaves the floor between them completely clear. Nothing stands loose in the middle of the room except the bed. The one corner left deliberately unbuilt is the window corner, which holds an accent chair and a small round side table under layered sheer curtains. The chair is upholstered in the same neutral weave as the headboard, and the side table is small enough that it never becomes a second desk.
Sheers were used instead of heavy drapes because this window faces a low light aspect and the room needed every bit of daylight it could take. Two layers hang on a double track, so one can be drawn for privacy in the afternoon while the second stays open. A blackout roller sits behind them for sleeping, operated by chain rather than motor, which is worth doing in a city where the power goes without warning. The track is recessed into a plaster pelmet so no hardware appears in the room, and the drop runs to the floor rather than to the sill, since a short curtain in a bedroom this plain reads as a shortcut.
Stopping a Wardrobe Run Reading as a Corridor of Doors
A wardrobe that runs the full length of a wall in one finish stops being furniture and starts being a partition. We broke this one with a glass fronted centre unit, lit inside, holding the pieces that deserve to be seen while everything ordinary stays behind solid white doors. The break also gives the eye somewhere to stop halfway along a run that is otherwise close to four metres.
Doors are handleless with a routed finger pull along the top edge, so the elevation stays uninterrupted and there is no ironmongery to catch a sleeve on in a narrow room. Behind them the carcass is moisture resistant board with ventilated backs, because a sealed timber box against an external wall in July is how clothes in this city end up smelling of damp. A Desk Small Enough to Keep Being Used
Built into one end of the wardrobe run is a desk sized for a laptop, a notebook and a cup, and nothing more. A full workstation in a bedroom becomes a shelf for laundry within a month, which is the most reliable pattern in bedroom interior design in Dhaka that we see. Power and data come up inside the joinery so no cable crosses the floor, the chair tucks fully under the top, and the lamp is a slim task fitting rather than a table lamp that would need a surface of its own.
Lighting a Face Honestly
The dressing area combines a marble topped nook, a round mirror lit around its full perimeter and a white dressing unit below. Perimeter lighting at a neutral colour temperature is the only arrangement that shows makeup as it will look once someone walks out of the building. Warm cove light of the sort used over the table in the modern dining room design in Bashundhara R/A Block-M would flatter the face in the mirror and lie about it outdoors. The open handbag shelving beside the mirror runs on the same circuit, lit from above at each shelf so the bags read as objects rather than as stored luggage.
Lessons Worth Carrying Into a Similar Bedroom
Two things are worth taking from it. Decide which rooms in the flat are loud and which are quiet before anybody selects a single finish, because that hierarchy is far harder to fix after the joinery is fitted. Then push every function you can into one continuous run and hand the floor back to the room.
